UCalgary Campus Pageantry

Walkway enrichment flags & printed calendar Role: Designer

The University of Calgary has over 100 lightpoles illuminating walkways on the main campus, decorated with custom hanging flags (pageantry) refreshed every few years. In 2018 the President’s Office asked that the pageantry represent the school’s interconnected strategic research themes, campus initiatives, and national awareness program. No small challenge, I designed and illustrated 11 sets of flags to represent these complex ideas in alignment with the UCalgary ‘energize’ brand. The designs needed to be simple and striking, but not static. Then-President Cannon and her team were very happy with the outcome and the flags did a few extra years of duty due to campus lockdowns.

I oversaw the conception, design and production of the flags and also modified the designs to produce a corresponding (and popular) desk calendar distributed to internal clients across the university.
